Project Description
Solar PV System & Renewable Energy
Off-Grid Solar Power at Remote Facility
A practical, sustainable energy solution providing reliable electricity to a remote storage facility without access to a mains supply.
Project Overview
Thompson Building Services Engineers delivered an innovative off-grid power solution for a remote storage unit at an operational water treatment works.
With no mains electricity available at the location, a conventional electrical connection would have required additional infrastructure, cost and disruption. Our team developed a self-contained solar PV and battery storage system capable of providing dependable power for lighting, heating and general electrical use.
The completed installation combines two 500W solar panels with an Anker SOLIX F3800 portable power station and an additional battery, giving the client a flexible source of renewable electricity precisely where it is needed.
The Challenge
The storage unit’s remote position meant there was no accessible mains electricity supply. However, the facility still required a reliable and convenient source of power to support the people using it and the activities taking place inside.
The solution needed to:
- Operate independently from the electricity grid
- Generate and store energy at the point of use
- Support lighting, heating and general electrical equipment
- Be practical and straightforward for the client to operate
- Suit the requirements of a remote water-treatment environment
- Provide a more sustainable alternative to installing extensive new electrical infrastructure
Power Where It Is Needed
The new installation provides reliable electricity for:
- Internal lighting
- Heating
- General electrical use
- Portable tools and equipment, where suitable
- Charging essential devices
By generating and storing electricity locally, the system gives the client greater flexibility when using the remote facility. The portable power station also provides clear system information and accessible controls, making the installation easy to monitor and operate.
Project Benefits
Self-contained power for a location without mains electricity
1kWp of installed solar generation capacity
Battery storage for use outside peak daylight hours
Reliable lighting, heating and general electrical provisionconnections
Reduced need for additional mains infrastructure
Flexible and straightforward operation
A practical contribution towards the client’s environmental objectives
A scalable approach that can be considered for other remote facilities
A Sustainable, Practical Solution
This project demonstrates how renewable technology can solve an everyday operational challenge in a practical and effective way.
Solar generation reduces the need to import electricity from the grid, while battery storage allows the available energy to be used more efficiently. The installation also avoided the need to create a lengthy permanent mains connection to the remote building.
The result is a lower-carbon solution that supports the client’s operational requirements while making productive use of renewable energy generated on site.
Investing in Renewable Energy Skills
The project also reflects Thompson’s continued investment in the skills needed to support the transition to cleaner energy.
James has recently completed a City & Guilds Level 3 qualification for Installation & Maintenance of Solar PV systems, strengthening our in-house knowledge of solar photovoltaic technology and supporting our ability to deliver safe, practical and effective renewable-energy solutions for clients.
By investing in recognised industry training, we are developing our team alongside the technologies shaping the future of building services—helping us provide informed advice and dependable installation standards across future solar PV projects.
