Thermal & Acoustic Imaging

Non Intrusive Electrical Safety Management

The Challenge

Large electrical panel boards are critical to the safe and reliable operation of complex facilities — yet many electrical faults develop silently, long before there are visible signs of failure.

Traditional visual inspections alone are often not enough to detect early-stage issues that can lead to fire risk, equipment damage, or costly unplanned outages.  It is also costly and inconvenient to arrange shut downs to work safely undertaking physical inspections.

Background

As part of a proactive electrical safety and asset management initiative, our team was engaged to carry out Thermal Imaging and Acoustic Imaging inspections on large electrical panel boards at a major university campus. The facility operates a complex electrical infrastructure supporting teaching spaces, laboratories, student accommodation, and critical services, making reliability and safety essential.

The objective of the inspection was to identify early-stage faults that may not be visible during traditional visual inspections, helping the client reduce risk, prevent unplanned outages, and improve overall operational efficiency.

Results & Impact

The combined inspection approach delivered immediate value to the university by providing:

  • Early identification of hidden electrical faults
  • Reduced risk of electrical fires and unplanned shutdowns
  • Improved safety for staff, students, and contractors
  • Clear, prioritised recommendations for maintenance planning
  • Greater confidence in the reliability of critical electrical infrastructure

Importantly, the inspections were completed with minimal disruption to operations, supporting the university’s commitment to safety and continuity.

Thermal Imaging – Identifying Heat-Related Risks

Thermal Imaging enabled rapid identification of:

  • Overheating connections and terminations

  • Phase load imbalances

  • Elevated temperatures caused by loose or deteriorating connections

  • Elevated temperatures caused by loose or deteriorating connections

These conditions often indicate increased fire risk and reduced system efficiency. While not yet causing outages, the findings  can highlight faults that required attention before escalating into critical incidents.

Acoustic Imaging – Detecting the Faults You Can’t See

Acoustic Imaging added a powerful second layer of protection by identifying high-frequency sounds sound signatures linked to:

  • Partial discharge

  • Electrical arcing

  • Corona activity

These issues can exist without producing detectable heat, meaning they may go completely unnoticed during standard inspections. Acoustic Imaging allowed early detection of electrical degradation at a stage where corrective action is simpler, safer, and more cost-effective.

Why This Matters for Other Businesses

This case study demonstrates how proactive electrical condition monitoring delivers tangible benefits across all sectors, including commercial, industrial, education, and health facilities.

Organisations adopting Thermal and Acoustic Imaging can expect:

  • Enhanced Safety
Early fault detection significantly reduces fire and electrical hazard risks.
  • Improved Operational Efficiency
Identifying issues early prevents unexpected downtime and reactive maintenance.
  • Lower Whole-of-Life Costs
Planned interventions cost substantially less than emergency repairs or asset replacement.
  • Extended Asset Life
Proactive maintenance helps maximise the lifespan of electrical infrastructure.
  • Stronger Risk & Compliance Position
Demonstrates a proactive, best-practice approach to electrical safety management.

The Takeaway

This university project highlights the value of moving beyond traditional inspections to a proactive, data-led approach to electrical maintenance. By combining Thermal and Acoustic Imaging, organisations gain earlier insight, better decision-making capability, and greater control over safety, reliability, and costs.

It’s a smarter way to manage electrical risk — before small issues become major problems.
