Introduction to Thompson Building Services Engineers

Thompson Building Services is a well-respected  M&E contractor based in Preston, with an annual T/O of approximately £6m. We are predominantly an electrical contractor; the mechanical department was formed 3 years ago to offer a true combined and coordinated Mechanical/Electrical offering to our clients.

The initial phase of the mechanical introduction has led to the department having a T/O circa 800k. We work in the commercial and industrial sectors, and our clients include Local Councils, Schools, Universities, Office facilities, Utility companies, Healthcare/hospital facilities, retail, hospitality, and sports stadia.

Our projects can range vastly from refurbishing W/C rooms to full Turnkey M&E projects, including all HVAC and plumbing requirements, on new builds and refurbishment projects with a combined M&E value of up to £1m. Approximately 95% of our projects are located within 60 minutes’ drive from our office in Preston.

The Job Role

  • Deliver commercial/industrial mechanical projects from commencement to completion, including:
  • Preparation of estimating
  • Sourcing of Supply Chain and Sub Contractors
  • Procurement
  • Project Management and Planning
  • Managing Costs on projects, budgets, Variations, and Valuations
  • Delivering projects meeting our HSEQ goals within the ISO framework
  • Managing the Completion phases, Commissioning, and Handover of Projects, including O&M Manuals

How this will be achieved

  • Working with the senior management team on strategic planning of the mechanical department, including goal setting and measuring progress against targets, identifying credit-safe clients who match our requirements and philosophy.
  • Working with our existing clients and continuing to develop relationships to ensure repeat business.
  • Working with the senior management team to develop the Mechanical delivery Process and Procedures within the existing ISO framework to ensure that the projects are delivered to a high quality, safely, in a timely manner, and profitably.
  • Working with the company IT systems and utilizing these for estimating and contract management.
  • Working with the Electrical department to refine processes and ensure true integration of combined M&E projects, offering a seamless service.
  • Working with the senior management team to manage labour resources and forward planning of labour requirements. Developing our supply chain of trusted subcontractors and looking to develop an in-house team capable of undertaking the secured projects.
  • Working with the senior management team to identify new technologies and training requirements.
  • Working with the site engineers and subcontractors to ensure an emphasis on delivering high-quality, safe, coordinated, well-planned, and profitable projects is the focus of everyone’s attention from commencement to completion.
  • Reporting to the senior management team on a weekly basis, advising on the progress of ongoing works, reporting potential problems, and discussing solutions with the support of your colleagues.

Person Specification

  • A dynamic, ambitious Mechanical Contracts Manager, who is looking to grow into a more senior leadership role.

  • Has good technical knowledge and experience across the HVAC and plumbing sectors.
  • Has experience in all aspects of fulfilling the role from the initial enquiry review, including measuring materials and labour and understanding sub-contractor elements. Additionally, they will be a confident and diligent Contracts Manager, capable of delivering secured projects to completion and post-completion.
  • The individual will be looking for development beyond the current vacancy and will look to continue their ambitious career within this business as the department grows following a structured plan and recruitment policy.
  • The right person will be willing to work with the management team on strategic business development, taking the mechanical department from circa £800k to an initial target in the region of £2m within target time periods, generating works with credit-secure clients who match our philosophy of delivering projects and service, maintaining and developing ongoing relationships with existing clients. The strategic plan will focus on delivering high-quality installations with a hassle-free service to clients, ensuring profitability and managing H&S to the highest standards.
  • It would be advantageous if the individual has a strong network of contacts and can supplement the existing labour, sub-contractor, and distributor network.
  • The right person will be able to adapt their way of working to suit the systems within our ISO IMS framework, while having input into continuous improvement of the process to streamline and make it more efficient.
  • The right candidate will be happy to work on Mechanical projects ranging from small local commercial installations / planned maintenance and HVAC projects typically not exceeding £600k.
  • The right candidate will be friendly and approachable by nature, seeking a challenge, prepared to work through adversity with the support of our team, and looking to share in the celebrations of delivering successful projects with colleagues.
